Buses

The Naples mass transit system, ANM, encompasses the utilization of city buses, cable cars and streetcars.

ANM buses, and streetcars are orange. They are usually boarded through the rear door and exited through the middle and front doors. It is mandatory to validate your pre-purchased ticket by inserting it into the small standing box located on the buses, or streetcars, and in the Funicolare stations. The ticket will be stamped and marked with the corresponding boarding time and date.

Buses are identified by numbers, letters, or numbers and letters that appear on the front as well as on the rear side window. ANM buses stop at specific places designated by a yellow bus stop sign. These signs indicate two types of stops: Mandatory (Obbligatoria), meaning the bus driver will stop without being solicited by the prospective traveler; and Optional (Facoltativa), meaning the bus driver must be flagged down by waiting passengers. Bus stop signs also indicate main stops en route.

Streetcars (Tram)

Naples streetcars are owned by ANM. They operate approximately every 20 minutes between 0530 and 2300, all week. Tram #1 is especially convenient to Americans who wish to get from the Bagnoli area to Mergellina, Fleet Landing, Piazza Garibaldi, and Shoe Alley (Via Marino di Caramanico). This streetcar starts its route from Bagnoli-La Pietra, which is behind the Bagnoli Cumana Station.

Cable Cars (Funicolari)

The Funicolare is a cable car that runs on cable tracks up and down steep slopes. There are four (4) Funicolari in Naples: three go to the Vomero area and one to Via Manzoni (Posillipo area). They are operated by Metronapoli (MN).
The cable cars going to the Vomero area are the Funicolare di Montesanto, Centrale, and Chiaia.

The Funicolare di Montesanto is located in Piazza Montesanto and stops at Corso Vittorio Emanuele and Via Morghen (Vomero). It runs approximately every 10 minutes from 0600 to 2200, all week.

The Funicolare Centrale is located in Via Toledo, across from Galleria Umberto. When the run is "MISTO", it stops at Corso Vittorio Emanuele, Palizzi/Petraio, and Piazza Fuga (Vomero). When it is "DIRETTO", the cable car stops only in Piazza Fuga and Via Toledo. Operating hours are 0600 to 2400, approximately every 12 minutes, all week.

The Funicolare di Chiaia is located in Via del Parco Margherita, near Piazza Amedeo and makes three stops: Corso Vittorio Emanuele, Via Palizzi and Via Cimarosa. This cable car runs approximately every 10 minutes from 0600 to 2200, all week.
The cable car going to the Posillipo area is the Funicolare di Mergellina

The Funicolare di Mergellina, starts its run in Mergellina and goes to Via Manzoni. Intermediate stops are Sant'Antonio, San Gioacchino, Parco Angelina. It runs approximately every 12 minutes from 0600 to 2200, all week.
